Stellar Finalist List Announced For 2015 Gold Coast Music Awards

After an overwhelming flood of nominations for the reborn Gold Coast Music Awards, the delicate and difficult task of narrowing down finalists is now complete … and the list is packed with world-class talent.

gcma-fb-002The first awards of its kind in nearly two decades for the coast has emerged into an entirely new music landscape with a rich and matured phonic talent pool to swim through. Roots, rock, country and hip-hop have emerged as the flavour of the day for the city, however, the diversity of the nominations revealed a city with an intense love for all music, also including such audible creations from neo goth to post punk, nu metal to pub rock, rap, rhythm, blues and beyond.

Seven independent judges (selected by a wide panel of local music industry and community stakeholders and luminaries) listened to bucket loads of music, deliberating long into the nights over nearly 250 nominations from artists, venues and events from across the entire Gold Coast. The finalists were announced yesterday (see below).

The finalists in the city-wide search for the best home-grown music include Casey Barnes, Felicity Lawless, Hanlon Brothers, Jimmy The Saint And The Sinners and Lane Harry x Ike Campbell, who each were finalists in two categories.

The judging panel features music connoisseurs Trevor Jackson, Louise Bezzina, Neal Beattie, Sean Flanagan and the Hussy Hicks, with additional input from City of Gold Coast’s Cultural Advisor, Robyn Archer AO, and representatives from Southport Sharks Cabana Bar and Lounge as well as Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University.

Event organiser and spokesperson Samantha Morris said the quality of finalists was exceptionally high, reflecting the thriving local music scene.

“The diversity of musical talent from the Gold Coast certainly made the judging exciting. The Gold Coast has incredible music talent as well as enthusiastic, hard working people who strive to support musicians and live music – as evident from the finalists in our Music Champion of the Year category,” Sam said.

“The awards night will really give attendees a sense of the community at the core of Gold Coast’s vibrant and thriving music scene.”

Winners will not only score the honours and go down in history, but they’ll also secure a specially commissioned SWELL sculpture trophy by artist Dion Parker at the awards ceremony evening, to be held on Wednesday 22 July at Burleigh Brewing. Tickets are selling fast, and for $55 attendees will get to walk the red (or whatever colour will be rolled out) carpet in absolute style, get your first tasty Burleigh Brewing beer included (we recommend Big Head, their no-carb drop is bloody fantastic), light refreshments and some blisteringly good entertainment from Hussy Hicks and a hand-selected bunch of friends.

Not content with just leaving it up to the judging panel, there’s also going to be a ‘People’s Choice’ award which you can get involved and participate in to support your favourite artist or band. Voting in the Burleigh Brewing Co. People’s Choice Award opens July 1st.

The Gold Coast Music Awards are proud to be presented in partnership with Burleigh Brewing Co. and supported by City of Gold Coast, Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University and Southport Sharks Cabana Bar and Lounge.
